When to Get a Kia Oil Change?

Service Technician changing the oil on a vehicle

Oil changes are vital to the longevity of your Kia sedan or SUV. That’s why we want Smithton and Trenton drivers to get the most out of their new, used, or certified pre-owned Kia. Regular oil changes ensure that your vehicle’s oil will be clean and fresh to maintain peak performance.

Depending on who you ask, some auto mechanics and service experts recommend getting an oil change every 3,000 miles. But modern manufacturing, new technology, and performance features have extended the interval to 7,500 and 10,000 miles between oil changes on later model vehicles.

General Guidelines for Kia Change Oil Change Intervals

The suggested oil change interval of 7,500 to 10,000 miles will help you stay on track with keeping clean oil in your vehicle. This range works well if you’re using your vehicle primarily for going to work or driving around town.

If you have an SUV, which has a bigger engine and more power, that’s used more frequently for work, travel, or commuting, consider bringing your car in for an oil change a bit earlier than recommended.

Think about bringing your vehicle to our service center every 5,000 miles for an oil change if you use your Kia for these tasks:

  • Off-roading
  • Commercial use
  • Racing
  • Heavy towing

More Oil Change Tips for Shiloh Drivers

Next time you need a Kia oil change, keep these helpful tips in mind to take advantage of your regular maintenance at our Shiloh service department:

  • Even if you don’t drive your car much, you’ll still want to get an oil change at least twice a year for an older car. Oil breaks down over time, even if the car isn’t getting used. Some modern vehicle owner manuals say to bring in your car within one year or less.
  • Whenever you get your oil changed, you should replace the oil filter as well. You can always stop by our dealership for an oil filter if you’re doing a DIY oil change. Whenever we do a Kia oil change, the oil filter gets changed.
  • What type of oil does your car need? If you’re unsure whether your vehicle requires conventional or synthetic oil, check out your owner’s manual! Synthetic oil can cost more, but some cars require it. Synthetic oil is much better for engines and can make them last longer.

How to Change Oil on a Car

In addition to keeping yourself on a consistent oil change schedule, you can monitor your vehicle’s oil at home or on the road. Checking for potential leaks in the oil system, oil discoloration, and any metal particles in the oil. Regular checks will help you identify any problems or issues before they become worse later on. Problems with the oil can affect other important functioning parts of your vehicle.

If you’re up to performing a Kia Soul oil change or Kia Optima oil change at home, follow these steps:

  1. Jack your car up with jack stands or steel ramps.
  2. Locate the oil drain plug on the bottom of your oil pan underneath your engine. Place an oil basin directly underneath the plug, then unscrew the plug and allow the old oil to drain out completely (this may take up to 15 minutes). With all the oil drained, you can replace the plug.
  3. Locate your oil filter, and remove it with an oil filter wrench. Expect a bit of extra oil to drain out when you remove the filter, and keep the basin underneath to catch it.
  4. Grab your new filter and rub a bit of oil around the rubber seal to ensure the filter is watertight.
  5. Set the new filter in place, then tighten it by hand.
  6. Now that your old oil is fully drained and a new filter is in place, you can remove your oil cap. Pour in the specified amount of new oil, which you can find in your owner’s manual if you’re unsure. Finally, replace the oil cap.
  7. Before finishing up, check your oil level by pulling out the dipstick. If you’re still low, you may add another ounce and check the level again. Once you get a proper oil level reading, you’re good to go!
  8. You cannot dispose of motor oil in the trash or by pouring it down the drain. You must bring the used motor oil to an authorized oil change center. They will send the oil to a recycling facility where it gets refined and reused.
