How Often to Change a Cabin Air Filter

Dirty Air Filter

Have you ever wondered how often to change a cabin air filter? If you’re like many drivers, you probably haven’t even thought about it (and that’s a problem). In most cases, Mascoutah drivers are encouraged to change their air filter once every 15,000 miles. For most drivers, that means purchasing a new cabin air filter every year or so!

Don’t forget: You can pick up a new cabin air filter at your local O'Fallon parts department. Although our service center would be happy to include replacement in your next regular service visit, most drivers can also learn how to perform this simple switch at home.

What Does a Cabin Air Filter Do?

What does a cabin air filter do? It prevents dust, allergens, and pollutants from entering your cabin! By cleaning the air as it passes through your heating and A/C vents, your cabin air filter allows you to enjoy a safer, healthier drive in Smithton and Trenton.

It’s normal for a cabin air filter to get clogged with dirt and debris. After all, those unhealthy particles need to go somewhere! Read on to find out when it’s time for a change, and how to perform the steps yourself.

How Do I Know When to Change a Cabin Air Filter?

  • If the air flow from your heating and climate control systems isn’t as strong as it used to be, you may need a new air filter.
  • If you notice an unpleasant odor that doesn’t go away after a few minutes, your filter may be to blame.
  • Have you noticed more dust inside of your interior? If particles aren’t being filtered out, a degraded air filter is likely to blame.

If you often spend time on the backroads, or drive in a city with lots of pollution or construction, you may need to change your filter more often than usual! 15,000 miles is only an estimate, so be sure to keep an eye out for these common indicators.

Tips on How To Change a Cabin Air Filter

  1. Check your owner’s manual to find out where your cabin air filter is located.
  2. If it’s in the glove box or under the hood, you should be able to change it out in short order. If it’s under the dashboard, you’re looking at a longer job.
  3. Put on gloves and a breathing mask before you switch out the filter! You’ll want to work carefully, to avoid releasing dust and particles.
  4. Once you’ve located the filter, simply take it out and place it in a garbage back. Install the new cabin air filter, and you’re good to go.

Depending on your model, a genuine cabin air filter may range from $25 to $70. Although drivers might be tempted to save a few dollars by going aftermarket on their air filters, OEM parts are made to fit your vehicle exactly and are affordable thanks to our Kia parts specials!
