2020 Kia Sportage vs. 2020 Kia Sorento

The 2020 Kia Sportage and the 2020 Kia Sorento both have so much to offer our neighbors in Smithton and Trenton. They’re both Kia SUVs, after all! Still, if you’re trying to make the right choice for your daily drives, there are a few things you need to know:

  • The Kia Sportage is a two-row compact SUV. The Kia Sorento comes standard with a third row, and fits into the midsize SUV segment.
  • The Sorento can tow heavier loads and carry a greater amount of cargo with its rear seats folded. It can also carry 1-2 more passengers than a fully-loaded Sportage.
  • The Kia Sportage comes standard with a wider array of safety features. However, the 2020 Sorento offers more options as you upgrade.

  • Cargo volume with last row flat – 38 cubic feet
  • Cargo volume with all rear seats flat – 73 cubic feet

What if you need to move more cargo than you can fit in your cargo bay?

  • The 2020 Kia Sportage offers a maximum towing capacity of 1,653 pounds.
  • The Sorento can tow 2,000 pounds with FWD and the base engine, or 3,500 pounds with FWD and the engine upgrade. At maximum, it lets you tow up to 5,000 pounds.

Kia Sportage vs. Sorento: Performance

Comparing the Kia Sportage vs. Kia Sorento on performance? Both come equipped with the same base engine, a 2.4L Inline-4. However, each model achieves unique specifications:

  • The base Kia Sportage offers 181 hp and 175 lb-ft of torque. Additionally, it gets up to 23 mpg city and 30 mpg highway with FWD.
  • With a base Kia Sorento, you’ll get 185 hp and 178 lb-ft of torque. Despite this model’s larger size, its fuel economy ratings don’t differ significantly. You’ll get 22 mpg city and 29 mpg highway with standard FWD.

You can also upgrade the Kia Sportage with a 2.0L turbocharged Inline-4, which offers 240 hp and 260 lb-ft of torque. The Kia Sorento engine upgrade is a 3.3L V6, and it delivers 290 hp and 252 lb-ft of torque.

Here again, the two models are closer than you might expect, in terms of fuel economy. The Sportage upgrade gets you 20 mpg city, 28 mpg highway, while the Sorento upgrade offers 19 mpg city and 26 mpg highway. Both estimates were made with FWD, although all-wheel drive is available in both models.

Kia Sportage vs. Sorento: Safety Features

  • The baseline Kia Sportage trim offers Forward Collision Warning with Pedestrian Detection, Lane Keeping Assist, and a Driver Attention Monitor. To get the same features in the 2020 Kia Sorento, you’ll have to upgrade to the EX trim.
  • For 2020, both the Sorento and the Sportage offer a Blind Spot Collision Warning as a standard feature, in the first upgrade after each model’s base trim. However, only the Sorento offers Blind Spot Collision Avoidance assist as an upgrade, starting in the S trim.

If you’re not interested in paying for upgrades, the safety features on the Sportage might be enough to convince you it’s the best option! However, if you plan on going for one of the higher-end trims, you’d have cause to opt for the Sorento. Check out our guide to the 2020 Kia Sorento configurations to learn more.
